WHO WE ARE

Background

Odisha boasts a rich culture and a delicious cuisine. However, for some reason, Oriya cuisine is not as well-known as other Indian food cultures today. This may be due to a lack of information available online or because its simple and healthy nature has not garnered attention from food lovers. At Sangita's Kitchen, our goal is to provide ample information on Oriya food and its preparation style for foodies to enjoy. While we specialize in Oriya recipes, we also offer a diverse range of Indian cuisine options, including North Indian, South Indian, and Chinese recipes.

Odisha boasts a diverse array of cuisine, ranging from homemade dishes to festival specialties and occasional party foods, such as those served at marriage functions. Additionally, visitors to the state can enjoy temple food, including the popular Lord Jagannath's Abhada. In western Odisha, one can find distinct variations in the local cuisine, setting it apart from other parts of the state. Overall, the food culture in Odisha is vast and diverse, with thousands of unique dishes and flavors waiting to be discovered.

MohaPrasad

Each temple in Odisha has its own unique food (bhoga/prasad) that is served to its respective god or goddess. For example, the Maha Prasad or Abhada served at the Puri Jagannath temple is world-renowned. Similarly, the Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar offers prasad with a similar preparation style for Lord Siva. For those interested in experiencing the unique cuisine offered at these temples, our Temple Food section provides detailed information on the various dishes served.

Mahaprasad of Lord Jagannath in Puri

The Mahaprasad of Lord Jagannath in Puri is a grand offering consisting of 56 recipes, also known as chhapan bhoga. This is based on the legend of Krishna missing his eight meals for seven days while trying to save a village from a storm, holding up the Govardhan hill. The Mahaprasad is further categorized into two types: Sankudi Mahaprasad and Sukhila Mahaprasad. Additionally, Odisha is home to a wide variety of sweets, including Chenna Poda, Rasagola, Rasabali, Rabidi, and Chhena Jhili, among others.
